The "Pop-In"

so last night the wife is working, the kids are getting ready for bed and i'm watching futurama.

doorbell rings.

now it's dark, snowing and i live on a back road, so it's very odd to have a visitor.

haha yup! the ole Bathroom Break Pop-In. What am I? a gas-station restroom?

why do they do it? what makes them feel so entitled so as to just march into someone's house?

I remember one A-hole just "popped-in" when we were having guests over. we were cooking dinner and they just invited themselves in for a plate. WTF? Honestly, if they tried that now I would tell them to get the FACK out, but back then we were still active, confused and didn't know any better. But I remember afterwards we were thinking to ourselves, "That's kinda messed up."

Doorbell rings. Now it's dark, snowing and I live on a back road, so it's very odd to have a visitor. The dog is going NUTS. I answer the door, it's a JW elder. We haven't been to the meeting in over a year now. He wants to set up a time when him and the PO can come over for a shepherding call.

I gave him the runaround and will probably send him a message telling him to not bother, but it made me wonder about something.

It seems like to me that only JWs do the unannounced "pop-in" visit. Since I've been out in the real world with non-JWs, nobody does this! Even the biggest non-JW jerks I know wouldn't dare just stop by without calling first or whatever. JW's seem to just feel comfortable showing up out of the clear blue and expecting you to drop everything and invite them in.

Your thoughts please.

How long did it take you to prepare for talks or parts in the KM school?

several years ago, whenever i got a talk slip i would get really nervous but accept it and work on it almost immediately.

of course that was way back when i still believed it all.. now they gave me a #3 talk out of the blue about a month ago and i had forgotten all about it till the meeting night.

i really thought about not showing up at all but at the last minute, i decided to go.. so when i got there the meeting had already started and so i just stayed in the back looked at the info, found 2 scriptures and then without any notes i went up and gave the stupid talk!.

How to do the job of a Ministerial Servant in 4 easy steps.

1) WT-CDROM in Kingdom Hall Library, search keyword in talk title, hit search.

2) print out relevant Watchtower article from '97. read verbatim on platform.

3) sit down. everyone commends you on a "fine job" and "looks forward to your next assignment".

4) Go home, drink.

i'm currently dealing with some very religious jw family members and this has led to several "debates" (i hate to use the term debate, since it's more of a one-sided argument where they do nothing but reference watchtower publications, but whatever).. gotta be careful in what i'm about to ask, since there's been quite a bit of turmoil on here whenever there is a religion vs. science sort of discussion.

i've searched on past threads as this topic has come up but haven't received any real answers one way or another.

just lots of fighting.

Okay, so I just blew the dust off my old King James and NWT.... read about Noah's curse on his son. No mention anywhere about if Ham was black, white or purple with yellow stripes. Ham could've been a 350 lb soccer hooligan from Manchester with no tan, for all we know.

C'mon religious folk. I'm not trying to fight ya. I'm not trying to lure anyone into an argument. I just am really interested in how those of faith explain this. Sab, AGuest, tec, ChristAlone...anyone? Send me a PM, so we don't start a riot.

One reasoning I heard was that the genetic code of Adam & Eve contained all the necessary genes to cause the difference in color and so on. They used the example of recessive genes.

Interesting. I wonder if this would also indicate that God knew beforehand that there was going to be different nations.
